Who is a Prosthodontist and what is Prosthodontics?

A prosthodontist is basically a dentist, who is specialized in teeth replacement and cosmetic dental restoration. And prosthodontics is the dental specialty and the main section of dentistry that focuses on dental prostheses. It’s often referred as prosthetic dentistry or dental prosthetics.

Prosthodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the main dental associations. The American Dental Association is defining prosthodontics as “the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.”

Dentists need to undergo a three years postgraduate specialty training after obtaining their dental degree, to become a prosthodontist. A prosthodontist can restore the best appearance to your smile. The planning and surgical placements and refurbishment of implants and renewal of occlusion with prostheses are all falling under the field of prosthodontics. The specialty training for prosthodontics includes instructive and clinical preparation in the basic health science, the anatomy of head and neck, biomedical and biomaterial sciences, implantation surgery and many other important sections in dentistry. This broad and extensive training, enable prosthodontists to treat any complex cases, congenital disorders, full mouth reintegration and various prostheses constructions.

This division of dentistry mainly treats patients, who have defects in the maxillofacial (head and neck/ upper jaw and face) region. Defects in these regions are usually caused by cancer surgery, birth defects, trauma etc. Maxillofacial prosthodontists are prosthodontists first. They are attaining a fellowship training exclusively for one year in Maxillofacial prosthetics to get specialize as a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist.
